Bio
Joshua R. Goldstein is Chancellor’s Professor of Demography in the Department of Demography at the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently director of the Berkeley Population Center and the Berkeley Formal Demography Workshops and Graduate Advisor in the Department. At Berkeley, he has served as chair of the Department of Demography and the Graduate Group in Sociology and Demography from 2013-2018. He was previously director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany (2006-2013) and a Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs and and Faculty Associate of the Office of Population Research at Princeton University (1996-2006).
He is co-editor of the “Formal Relationships” series at Demographic Research and founder of the Human Fertility Database, the Mosaic Census Project for historical censuses, and, most recently, the CenSoc project, making available administrative micro- data to study mortality disparities.
Josh is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the 2024 recipient of the Mendel C. Sheps Award from the Population Association of America for outstanding contributions to mathematical demography, a co-winner of the IPUMS Research Award, and was elected scientific member of the Max Planck Society. He was also an honorary professor at the University of Rostock.
He has served on the PAA publications committee, as publisher of Demographic Research, on the National Academy of Science’s Committee on Population, and on the Social Security Technical Advisory Board.
Josh’s research interests include most areas of demography, including fertility, mortality, and migratin, with an emphasis on methods and mathematical modeling.
